The festival of Holi celebrated at Udaipur's City Palace
A grand and colourful spectacle took place for the festival of Holika Dahan that was celebrated at the Manek Chowk, Udaipur on the 10th March. Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur, the 76th Custodian of the House of Mewar and Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), conducted the traditional rites and ritual of lighting the Holika on the auspicious full moon night of Phalguna, heralding the onset of spring. Shriji was accompanied by members of the Royal Family of Mewar who also participated in the rituals and festivities.
Guests from overseas and India joined residents from Udaipur to witness this regal festival that is preserving the age-old traditions of Rajasthan and India. For many guests, it was the first time that they witnessed the 'living heritage' of Eternal Mewar as a procession began at Shambhu Niwas Palace, the private residence of the Royal Family, ending at Manek Chowk.
Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur and members of the Royal family conducted prayers with the palace priests at Bannathji Temple. Sacred text from the Vedas and Hymns were performed as Shriji lit the Holika and circled the fire, accompanied by priests.
“Holika Dahan marks the triumph of good over evil; it is truly an inspiring and colourful festival,” said Th. Bhupendra Singh Auwa, deputy secretary – MMCF, adding, “It is a regal festival that has been traditionally celebrated at the City Palace in Udaipur for centuries. We are proud to uphold this age-old tradition and make it meaningful for 21st century guests to Udaipur.”
