Gilbert John Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound the 4th Earl of Minto, KG, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, PC (1845 – 1914)
Earl Minto was appointed the Viceroy of India in 1905, following a successful stint as the Governor General of Canada (1898 -1904). His tenure until 1910 as Viceroy came a full century after his great grandfather the 1st Earl Minto's term as Governor General of India from 1807 - 1813. During Maharana Fateh Singh Ji's visit to Haridwar in April 1909, he broke the journey at Dehradun to formally invite Lord Minto to Udaipur. Lord Minto returned this courtesy later that year by scheduling a visit to Udaipur, Jaipur and Alwar. The occasion of his visit to Udaipur was marked by the laying of a foundation stone on the 3rd of November for the construction of a Durbar Hall at the The Palace. The building originally named 'Minto Hall' to commemorate this visit, was later renamed 'Fateh Prakash' by Maharana Bhagwat Singh Ji (r.1955 - 1984).
