The event was a week long, from 22nd March to 28th March 2021, and was accessible in its physical and digital forms. It brought together Museums, institutes, professionals and experts from across the Indian subcontinent and the World. It included a conference, virtual and on ground tours of participating Museums, and a series of Master-classes by experts.


The hybrid avatar

All of this would also take the form a catalogue. The City Palace Museum, Udaipur participated in this Biennale. Its exhibition Chroni c ling Mewar: History through the Arts showcased the rich traditions of the land of Mewar, and the many arts that were patronized during the course of its history.

The curation of objects touched upon various aspects such as silver smithy and ritual, military might, architectural pursuits and others. 10 Museum artefacts were curated as part of this exhibition and included unique pieces such as the 56 foot long Mewar Phad painting and an architectural drawing executed with a Crow-quill ink pen that documented an important construction-restoration work on behalf of the State; these could be caught virtually on the Biennale's social media platforms.

Holika Ropan - Setting up of Holika Effigy at Manek Chowk, The City Palace, Udaipur

Holika Ropan or the setting up a Holika Effigy is a unique ritual observed in the Northern part of India on Purnima or the full moon day in the month of Magh, as per the Hindu calendar. The effigy was made at Manek Chowk, The City Palace, Udaipur with traditional customs and rituals on 27th February 2021.

This ritual is associated with the Holi festival or the festival of colors. The day kick starts with the preparation for the Holi festival. Holika Dahan takes place on the next Purnima or full moon day, which is the Phalgun Purnima.
