The Legendry Sarod Maestro Padmabhushan Sharan Rani backliwal on Tuesday 8th
April 2008
It is with great regret that The Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation learns
of the demise of Sarod Maestro Padmabhushan Sharan Rani backliwal on Tuesday the
8th April 2008. Born in 1929 in Delhi, Shrimati Sharan Rani learnt the Sarod from
eminent musicians including Ustads Allauddin Khan and Ali Akbar Khan. She performed
worldwide and was the first woman musician in India to receive the Padmashri award.
She also collected rare musical instruments now considered a national treasure and
displayed in the National Museum, New Delhi. Intrigued by the origins of her instrument,
Sharan Rani researched and recorded her findings in a book, The Divine Sarod, published
in 1992. In the book she traces the instrument back to a second century sculpture.
Shrimati Sharan Rani received the Dagar Gharana Award at the Maharana Mewar Annual
Award Function 2003-04 for her work of permanent value to society through her achievement
in the field of Indian Classical music.
Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur, Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Maharana
of Mewar Charitable Foundation paid tribute to the legendry Maestro whose remarkable
career and dedication to Indian Classical music had entranced so many music aficionados
across the world.
