Ecological Restoration of Ahar River and Ecological Improvement of Udai Sagar Lake through Bio Techniques

As a part of the Integrated Lake Basin Management Programme (ILBM) of International Lake Environment Committee Foundation, Japan; an international workshop on Udaipur Lakes was organised by Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation and Jheel Sanrakhshan Samiti, Udaipur at The Durbar Hall, The City Palace Complex, Udaipur on 12th August 2009. The workshop was attended by the Chairman of ILEC Dr. Masahisa Nakamura and several prominent experts from India and Nepal. It was decided to eco-technologically treat the Ahar River which today carries the entire Udaipur's untreated waste water that will eventually pollute Udai Sagar ecologically. Dr. Sandip Joshi, Shrishti Eco-Research Institute, Pune an expert on sewerage treatment, presented a paper at the conference to help Udaipur alleviate the problem by applying eco techniques invented by him for treatment of Ahar River and Udai Sagar Lake.

The aim of the project is to create a pollution free environment and habitat and to rejuvenate the Ahar River and Udai Sagar Lake with echo-technology and ecological engineering.

The project conceived by Jheel Sanrakshan Samiti, Udaipur in technical collaboration with Shrishti Eco-Research Institute, Pune.

Udaipur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UCCI) took the challenge to construct, operate and maintain the project of rejuvenating of Udai Sagar Lake by restoring Ahar River ecologically. A Sub-Committee was constituted by UCCI which includes representatives from Government Departments, NGO's, Trusts, Mohan Lal Sukhadia University Departments, Village Panchayats and members of the industry. UCCI through its good offices raised the funds for the project through public organizations, individuals and major are PI Industries Ltd, Secure Meters Ltd and Wolkem India Ltd through Singhal Foundation, Udaipur; Hindustan Zinc Limited, Udaipur; Rajasthan State Mines & Minerals Limited, Udaipur; Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, Udaipur; Pyrotech Control (India) Pvt. Ltd, Udaipur; Harmony Plastics Pvt Ltd; Lipi Data Systems Ltd. Chamber recognizes the outstanding contribution and support provided by the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, Urban Improvement Trust, Zilla Parishad, Forest Department, Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation, all other government departments, local panchayats & public at large.

The first phase of the project that started in December 2009 included the planting of trees, shrubs, grasses and water plants. This was completed on the 16th March 2010.

The capital cost of the project of 33 Lakhs includes component Ecofert, Culture, Biomats; Stone, Gravel, Sand & Shrubs/ Grasses/ Plants; Water Hyacinth Removal and other cleaning processes; the Installation of green bridges and Metal Screens for polythene control. The yearly operational cost will be 5 lakhs to remove garbage from screens with safe disposal; the removal of the water hyacinth;
