The Musical Legacy of Mewar- A Royal Collection of Musical Instruments
Saraswati Vilas Gallery: 'Strings of Heritage' - A Royal
Collection of Musical Instruments. Music and other performing arts
have always found great support and patronage in the royal family of mewar. All Maharanas, over generations,
have been
passionate lovers of art, each contributing in his own unique way to create a richer culture that embodies
the House of
Mewar as it is known and seen today.
While Maharana Kumbha (r. 1433 - 1468 CE) built the strongest foundation for the Indian classical
music and
emerged as
one of its greatest proponents.
Maharana Sanga I (r. 1509 - 1527 CE) introduced the Arabeetasha, a musical instrument and
Maharana Raj Singh
I had the
Nau Chowki (a set of nine domes) intricately carved with musical instruments and dance forms, built at Lake
Rajsamand,
depicting the deep love for music shared by the Maharanas of Mewar.
Keeping alive the patronage even after the severance of the states and the merger of the Mewar State with
independent
India, Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar (r. 1955 - 1984 CE) maintained the tradition of the conservation
and
perpetuation of
the arts and cultural activities in Mewar. Foundation of the Maharana Kumbha Sangeet Kala Trust is an
important one of his
many contributions.
All 28 instruments on display belonged to members of the Mewar Family and some are over a hundred
years old.
