Princess Madeleine is the youngest of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's three children and fourth in line to the throne. British-American Christopher O'Neill works as a partner and head of research at Noster Capital in New York.

The marriage took place at the Chapel in the Royal Palace, Slottskyrkan. After the wedding, a 21-gun salute was fired at five second intervals as the wedding couple greeted the public outside the castle. They proceeded in a procession through the capital in a special horse-drawn carriage, the Parade Barouche that had been used by their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at their wedding. A boat took the newly married couple and the wedding party to the royal residence Drottningholm Palace where a private wedding reception and banquet was held.

Some 500 guests attended the wedding, including the Earl and Countess of Wessex; Princess Takamado of Japan, and Princes and Princesses from Norway, Denmark, Greece, Luxembourg and Monaco.
