Painting Conservation Workshop at The City Palace Museum, Udaipur

An international conservation workshop on the preservation of paintings on paper was held at The City Palace Museum, Udaipur from March 15th to 19th, 2017. The workshop was presented by Ms. Emily Jacobson, Paper & Photographs Conservator, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, USA with Mr. S. Girikumar, Art Conservator, Pune - Consultant to Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation. It was organised by Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, Udaipur.

The aim of the workshop was to provide practical information on the causes of deterioration, advice on ways to avoid collection damage and demonstrate conservation treatments to mitigate wear and tear. Two paintings from The City Palace Museum collection were examined in the conservation lab and possible conservation treatment options were considered. Ideal conditions for storing and exhibiting paintings were also discussed.

The participants were Ms. Vasundhara Kar, Ms. Ananya Mitra, Ms. Ritu Saran, Ms. Ashna Rawat, Mr. Prashant Lohar, Dr. Hansmukh Seth and Mr. Omkar Adhikari. Art historians Dr. Dipti Khera, Assistant Professor, Department of Art History and Institute of Fine Arts New York University, USA and Dr. Neeraja Poddar, Curator, The City Palace Museum, Udaipur also attended the workshop.
