Restoration of Old Doors inside the Pol of The City Palace Museum, Udaipur

The City Palace Museum, Udaipur is administered by the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), which was set up in 1969 to safeguard and preserve the cultural heritage and the time honoured traditions of the people of Mewar.

The museum showcases the vast repository of building practices of Mewar, with various sections of the complex clearly depicting the varied influences of the times and the personal building styles of successive custodians ranging from Rana Udai Singh II to the present, 76th custodian of the House of Mewar, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar, Chairman and Managing Trustee of MMCF.

Wooden doors being the architectural part for the visitors and an integral part of the museum inside the pol were found deteriorating and were in need of restoration. Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation took the initiative of restoring the wooden gates at Darikhana Ki pol - Main Entrance, Dhruvpol Gate, Rampol Gate, Sabha Shiromani Ka Darikhana Office Gates, Toranpol Gate, Tripoliya Gate, Khush Mahal, Mehakma Khas Ki Nal.

The treatment was given to the doors by following the procedure of first cleaning the accumulated dust, Durt and bird feces from the doors, after that paint remover was applied and made to wait for 15 -20 minutes before cleaning it with a wooded chisel. After cleaning the surface a coat of thinner was applied on the surface of the wood. Thereafter Lineseed oil mixed with Turpentine oil (Tarpin) and petrol was made to apply with a cotton cloth.
