Tradition of reciting Virudavali and Shubhraj

VIRUDAVALI - (Fame) - In almost all Indian Princely States and even in Mughal court, who adopted this practise, it was a tradition that whenever the Ruler appeared in the Durbar, on Political, Public, Community, Religious or on other occasions, the court Bard present there would loudly recite couplets in praise of the Ruler and his ancestors, giving all sorts of titles and appellations. In Mewar, also the court Bard would recite couplets in praise of the rulers, their ancestors, emphasising on their special values, qualities and their acts of valour in conjunction with their titles.

Before merger of Mewar in to the Union of India, it was a tradition in the royal Durbar at Udaipur, that the court bard Ashiya Bakhatram, Pasoond would recite Virudavali composed in sonnet, couplets and poems in local language on the arrival of the Maharana in the Durbar. He would address the Maharana, bestowing all sorts of new titles, and praise his valour, values and good deeds. These also changed from time to time.

SHUBHRAJ - (Blessings) - Shubhraj is also a kind of Virudavali. On all the festivals in the royal family of Mewar the Drumer or Damami community men or women recite Shubhraj in loud voice. It is composed in the local dialect in which the person reciting it will bless the Maharana, Maharani Saheba and their family members. On Maharana special titles, appellations, qualities are bestowed and blessings are given for their long life, good health and happiness. Before Shubhraj, the genealogical tree of the house of Mewar is also recited giving special reference to the good deed and valour performed by their ancestors.
