Preserving the Living Heritage of Behrupias

On April 24, 2024, the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, in a continued effort to patronize art and artists, hosted Behrupias (masquerade artists) for a traditional Swang Tamasa performance at the Udaipur palace. This event organized at The City Palace, Udaipur, aimed to celebrate vibrant folk arts and honor the talented artists behind them.

The theme of the event revolved around healthy humor presented in a traditional manner, with both young and senior Behrupiyas showcasing solo and duet swangs portraying various characters from daily life, creating a delightful atmosphere filled with humor and entertainment. Supported by the MMCF, these artists performed at the Baadi Mahal and Zenana Mahal of The City Palace Museum, Udaipur, with a core mission to preserve the ancient folk art heritage and empower these artists to continue presenting their vibrant art form. Among the talented Behrupiya artists who participated in this event were Padma Shri Mr. Janki Lal Bhand as Badam Bai and Luharan; Mr. Durga Ram Bhand as Narad Muni and Guru Chela; Mr. Chagan Lal Bhand as Naak Kati and Luhar; Mr. Vikram Bhand as Sethji and Nishad Raj; Mr. Ravi Kant Bhand as Joker and Charlie Chaplin.
