Holi 2008 - celebrating Colours of Mewar
Holi, one of the most popular Indian festivals is celebrated at a time when the seasons change, when winter gives way to spring. Holi, a two-day festival heralds merriment and rejoicing.
The first day celebrates the theme of triumph of good over evil whilst the second day is an expression of the universal brotherhood of man. The Holika Dahan ceremony that will be celebrated at the City Palace is the festival's first day when the sacred fire is lit on the night of the full moon of Phalguna (one of the 12 months of the Hindu calendar). It derives its significance from the ancient Indian myth illustrating the triumph of divine power over demonic-strength.
Rangoli a two-day Food Festival will be organised by HRH Group of Hotels to herald in Holi. Rangoli, like the colour powder drawings made on the door steps of Indian homes will explore a blend of flavour and colour at the popular Palkikhana, The Manek Chowk, City Palace Complex. Using Cuisine, Rangoli reflects cross-cultural exchanges and innovation demonstrating India's rich culinary diversity. The Chefs at Palki Khana will serve a veritable delight for guests of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes capturing the colours and festive mood of Holi.
Visitors can also partake in a rich cultural experience at Rang, an Arts and Crafts Bazaar where local artists and craftsmen will demonstrate their skills and share the intricacies of their art form. The bazaar will take place on the 19th and 20th March between 10:30am and 6pm. Entry is free. The Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation will also be organising a nine day collaborative folk arts workshop 'diverse mediums, collective voice' that will explore the interdisciplinary connection of different traditional arts and crafts from the region of Mewar.
The Regal Festival of Holi is testimony to the living heritage of Eternal Mewar and represents India's eternal fascination with the celebration of life through its different seasons. It also offers a platform to nurture and showcase the intangible cultural heritage of the land.
Visitors are invited to experience the Colours of Mewar and participate in these events and enjoy the ambiance of the City Palace and the warm hospitality at Palki Khana.
