Conservation Fellowship Program Seminar (ICFP) 2019

Three members of the conservation team at The City Palace Museum, Udaipur, Ms. Saloni Ghuwalewala, Mr. S Girikumar and Ms. PM Vasundhara participated in the Indian Conservation Fellowship Program Seminar (ICFP) 2019 on November 5 and 6, 2019 in New Delhi.

Ms. PM Vasundhara was funded by The Andrew Mellon Foundation with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, to attend a fellowship at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET) from March to August 2019. She gave a presentation on her journey from The City Palace Museum, Udaipur to The Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation at The MET,

focussing on the various treatments she undertook at The MET. She also spoke about how her experience could be incorporated in future projects at The City Palace Museum, Udaipur, and eventually make the Museum a resourceful platform to formulate innovative approaches to conservation treatments in the region.

Mr. S Girikumar, Supervisor for Conservation Projects at the City Palace Museum, Udaipur, and an active member of the conservation community in India, was a part of the panel discussions held at the seminar. He spoke about the need to create awareness among all the stakeholders; conservators, patrons, policy makers, financiers, public, etc., and to make the conservation profession visible. He emphasised the need of having a peer-represented regulatory authority for conservation practices. Such a body could create a uniform curriculum to ensure the quality and uniformity of conservation training across the country, and lay down guidelines for professional practices. It could also monitor professional activities and take necessary course corrections, if and when required. He further stressed the importance of conservators following ethical practices for the long-term benefit of the profession, rather than making compromises for the short-term gains of the practitioners.

The seminar closed successfully with valuable contributions from The City Palace Museum, Udaipur.
